Description
Southeast Asia, 1945: As Japan’s empire crumbles, the island of Java braces for the whirlwind of revolution…
"The pace zips along…" — Army Rumour Service.
The second and final part of an ambitious, unconventional, compelling saga of men at war, captivity, forced prostitution, murder, political dirty tricks and mob terror in Japanese-occupied and revolutionary Indonesia. Black Sun, Red Moon gives us an almost tangible glimpse of the chaos that was Java in 1945-46. Marron’s writing, based on painstaking research infused with imaginative speculation, delivers a war drama that is sweeping, poignant, passionate and unflinching. (Publishers Catalogue.)
“I was there! Excellent, almost true story… I can vouch for many of the things that happened.” — Amazon reviewer
“A good, realistic account based on actual events. Well worth reading!”— Stuart Guild (27th Field Regiment Royal Artillery, Burma 1944-45)
Japan's surrender ends the Second World War but triggers the Indonesian declaration of independence from Holland. British, Gurkha and Indian troops, veterans of the fighting in Burma, arrive in Java expecting a warm welcome, gratitude and easy duties. Instead they find themselves unpopular, outnumbered and outgunned in the middle of a revolution. Their only ‘allies’ on Java are the still proud—and still armed—Japanese, who are ordered to defend white colonial rule…
Recent foes have no choice but to become allies—of a kind. In greatest peril are 80,000 European women and children internees. Abandoned, half-starved and defenceless, some of them former sex slaves of the Japanese, their inland camps lie within reach of rampaging mobs. Amidst the mayhem of siege, treachery and slaughter, once-sworn enemies must stand together against a murderous human tide. Wartime hatreds and prejudices are hastily re-examined. Yet when loyalties are questioned, the new, fragile bonds of comradeship are threatened; and the warrior-traditions of bushido will demand a deadly finale.
Five lives caught in a maelstrom:
Highlander Mac has had his fill of the British Army but finds himself facing a new, unpredictable foe and having to trust his former enemies with his life....
Internee Kate is struggling in the squalor and deprivation of a camp. With a sick mother, little food and no medicines she accepts 'hostess work' at a Japanese officers' club....
Lamban longs for independence for Indonesia. An encounter with an activist plunges him into a world of secret cells, intrigue and the heady brew of revolution....
Japan's surrender saves Lt Ota from a suicidal last stand. Yet to save the woman he loves he will take up the sword once more....
American war correspondent Meg Graham discovers there is no room for neutrals in a revolution. Determined that truth will not be the first casualty of the Java war, she risks the wrath of a dying empire….
